I think one of the things that make envy so strong is that it can be so much more than just lust for the other person. It can be that envy can be a way of seeking out those traits that are not usually found within you. It can be that it can be a way of making you feel inferior, even when the other person is actually not that bad. It can be that envy can be a way of feeling that what you do is wrong.
I love that line from the new song “Envy Me” by French rapper Drake. He sings, “I’m feeling like a girl who just got a new pair of shoes and I’m feeling like a girl who’s too fat to fit in the new shoes.” It is about feeling so bad that you’re jealous of your friend because you’re not the one who’s “just got new shoes.
I think we all need to be a little bit jealous of our friends, but I guess that feeling of envy can definitely be a way of feeling sorry for ourselves. So the song talks about feeling like a girl who just got a new pair of heels. That is extremely sad. And the lyrics about feeling like a girl who just got a new pair of shoes is a way of expressing your self-loathing, or feeling like you can’t control your own actions.
The song starts off with a pretty catchy melody, but it quickly gets dark and heavy. One of my favorite parts of the song is the line, “you dont even want to admit it, but you think youre better than them.” I love the idea of someone feeling like theyre better than someone else, and it seems to me that this song could be used to express that thought.
